Finding that perfect fit

Here are some great tips from a previous newsletter on hiring the perfect candidate and where to find them.

Looking to hire someone can prove to be a daunting task, but given the importance of the outcome it should require a considerable effort. The best place to begin your search may be right under your nose with someone you or a key associate already know. The individual may not be looking for a job and may in fact be employed by a competitor or in the same industry but not the same business, or perhaps in a different industry altogether but demonstrate the talent necessary to do the job. Another option, particularly when filling higher-level positions, might be to enlist the service of a search firm or highly reputed employment agency. Finding an outstanding employee may exceed the fee you will have to pay, and you may even be able to negotiate a reimbursement from the agency if the hired candidate does not work out within a reasonable amount of time. For entry or lower level positions, a temp agency may offer a wide range of applicants from which to choose. This allows both your company and the temp to “try each other on for size” without making the full-blown commitment to employment. Another step toward finding the right employee would be to advertise the position in the right places. While the local newspaper will provide you with a wide range of applicants, trade or industry magazines or specialized websites can supply candidates already interested in your field. Perhaps the most cost-effective and timely practice for filling open positions is to look within your own company. Your company bulletin board is a good place to advertise to folks whose work history and talents as well as their commitment to your company is already known.
